Time Galleries

Royal Observatory, Greenwich, London 2007

Casson Mann designed three of the new Time Galleries at the Royal Observatory Greenwich.

‘Time and Longitude’ tells the story of John Harrison and the race to solve the longitude problem. Our brief was to bring personalities into the story alongside the technological detail, with the story of longitude told through Harrison and other key players in the story. An interactive table explores the chapters of John Harrison’s life through the objects on his desk.

‘Time and Greenwich’ looks at the historical need to develop increasingly accurate timekeeping. The development of time keeping is looked at in terms of how time is measured, how it is shared and distributed, and how it is used; machines, means and people.

‘Time for the Navy’ explores the use of marine chronometers as an essential part of navigation. Until the 1950s, the Royal Observatory coordinated the servicing, repair and testing of all the Royal Navy’s chronometers in this very space. Today, visitors can watch the Royal Observatory’s Horology conservation workshop at work and explore the collection of marine chronometers.
