Locomotion: the National Railway Museum at Shildon
Shildon, Co Durham, 2004
Locomotion is a joint venture between Sedgefield Borough Council and the National Railway Museum at York. The development combines the refurbished buildings of the former Timothy Hackworth Museum and brings back into use two buildings of historical importance in Shildon’s railway heritage.
Combining the historic buildings and workshops of the Timothy Hackworth Museum with a new building housing sixty vehicles from the National Collection, the museum is on the site where the first passenger train started its journey in 1825 and where the first railway town, Shildon, was born.
Casson Mann were asked to take on the exhibition design and wayfinding so that the whole site told a coherent and interesting narrative about the importance of Shildon in rail history.
