Young Design Centre

The Sorrell Foundation, London, September 2007

The Sorrell Foundation asked us to design an exhibition for their Young Design Centre in Somerset House. We used old wooden school desks to house the exhibition content, from the history of schooling to the foundation’s joinedupdesignforschools initiative. While the outside of the desks remain scruffy and covered in graffiti, the insides have been sanded down and painted to make a highly finished context for touchscreens and films. Each desk has a light inside which flickers invitingly even when the desk’s lid is closed. As the exhibition progresses from the history of schooling to the modern day, the desks begin to behave in a less orderly fashion – some fly, some lose their rear two legs and sit next to the visitor on a bench to watch a film.
